It's a cultural thing. The Ganges is considered a holy river and a goddess as well, so when they're not burning the corpses, letting their relatives drift away on a holy river is the next best option. Also, out of sight, out of mind, since seeing your dead whatever peacefully float away into Hindu paradise makes for a good image when you don't have to deal with a rotting bloated corpse stinking to high heaven. Also, India is so huge and the Ganges so long that quite a few people will inevitably drown and just keep on drifting. I doubt people don't care much, since they are all too busy fighting for their own survival.
As one can clearly see, the bacteria released from bloated, rotting carcasses enriches the river water, giving the average Indian bather soft, pimple-free skin and shiny, luxurious locks of hair.
The temple in these pics was featured on Taboo where they showed some rituals for the dead. In India, people actually bring their dying relatives to the temple and as soon as they pass, the body gets burned and the ashes are swept into the water.
I don't want to knock anyone's beliefs, but this just totally squicks me out.
I can't wait to go to India. The bodies floating in the river are the ones who were too poor to be cremated first. People wash clothes and drink from that river...so if you do visit be sure to make sure your bottled water is sealed!
If you are in the lowest caste system (harijans) then burning and taking care of dead bodies is your job, so I guess bathing with them isn't a big deal.
Personally, I think the idea that bathing in a corpse-strewn river was important to my faith would cause me to question my faith, but then faith and logic don't mix well.
I'm also subscribed to the LJ group "creativephoto" (don't know how to link it) so I get beautiful pictures mixed in with my gore. I was scrolling down when I got to this picture and thought, "Ooh, that's a lovely seaside town, I wonder where this... oh.... oh dear."
